Black People’s Justice Fund Arizona was created in response to the targeting of Black people by police. We are the organizers of Phoenix’s annual Black Mother’s Day Bailout. With COVID-19, now is a crucial time to keep all people out of jails, prisons, and detention centers.
HISTORY & IMPACT
Mass Liberation Arizona and other Black-led community organizations began the Black People’s Justice Fund (BPJF) during the George Floyd & Dion Johnson uprising in the summer of 2020. We fought to get hundreds of cases dropped before they even began by partnering with local attorneys to defend and represent hundreds of protesters at their initial appearances. We successfully freed 414+ protestors arrested for fighting police violence and provided legal services to hundreds of others.
The donations made to the Black People’s Justice Fund also supported Mass Liberation AZ’s #DropTheChargesMCAO campaign. We were able to hold the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and Phoenix Police Department accountable for politically targeting and prosecuting the hundreds of protesters who marched for Black Lives and an end to police violence. Here is the impact of this organizing:
We will always prioritize Black folx in our work, but will extend support to people of color, as well. We also prioritize releasing LGBTQIA+ people who are at risk of violence in carceral spaces.
It is our mission to end these destructive, anti-Black bail practices and #FreeThemAll!
